Description

PAO 1-4×24 SSS Mil-Dot IR Riflescope

Smart Spherical Structure

The PAO 1-4×24 SSS Mil-Dot IR Riflescope is a short scope for use on all air rifles, rimfire and centrefire rifles. But don’t let its compact size fool you! This scope may be little, but it comes with a huge spec list… and an even bigger performance! It also carries PAO’s Lifetime ‘Replace – not Repair’ warranty.

What is SSS?

SSS stands for Smart Spherical Structure. This is a highly innovative new concept in scope design, where the erector tube utilises an all-metal spherical construction. So when the windage and elevation turrets engage this part, you get more precise adjustments than with conventional scopes. Typically most other scopes use a metal-rubber interface for these adjustments. Besides extra precision, the SSS design is also more solid, meaning the scope is more likely to hold its zero under recoil, or with any knocks it may taken while in the field or on the range.

The elevation and windage adjusters on the PAO 1-4×24 SSS Mil-Dot IR Riflescope offer 1/2 MOA click-stop adjustments (1/2″ at 100 yards). Both the elevation and windage adjusters are external, so you can turn them with your fingers and do not need a coin. Each turret has a numbered vernier, which is easily reset to ‘0’ for reference. The turrets also feature a push-pull ‘lock’ facility so that you cannot inadvertently turn them and lose zero.

Other models in PAO’s SSS range include a 3-9×42 and 6-24×56.

Improved Field of View (FoV)

In addition, the PAO 1-4×24 SSS Mil-Dot IR Riflescope has an improved FoV – the overall vista you see when viewing your target through the scope. This comes courtesy of its Thin Scope Shell (TSS) construction and 30mm diameter body tube. Coupled with the lower magnification specifications of this SSS model, think of it as a wide-angle scope without the image distortion that you can sometimes experience with such scopes. A wider field of view means you will see a lot more detail around your target. This makes the PAO 1-4×24 SSS Mil-Dot IR Riflescope especially good for ‘spotting’.

Variable and Low Magnification

Not everyone wants a high magnification scope. The advantages of low-power magnification is that you get a clearer, brighter, sharper sight picture and wider FoV. Plus you don’t ‘see’ so much ‘wobble’ when you are on aim! This makes the PAO 1-4×24 SSS Mil-Dot IR Riflescope ideal for shorter range shooting, such as air rifle pest control and plinking. And, of course, it allows for a more compact scope design, so this SSS model would suit a bullpup style rifle, or a lightweight rimfire sporter. The 24mm diameter objective lens given an ‘ideal’ exit pupil of between 6-8mm (at 4-3x power). In addition, its compact size will not interfere with your rifle’s receiver.

The PAO 1-4×24 SSS Mil-Dot IR Riflescope adds a bonus feature, too. It is specced with a zoom ring throw lever, making it a lot easier to turn the magnification ring, even if you’re wearing thick shooting gloves. The zoom range is stepless and turns between 1x power and 4x power. So, at full magnification, the target appears four times closer!

IR Illuminated Reticle

The multi-stadia crosshair of the PAO 1-4×24 SSS Mil-Dot IR Riflescope features a thick and thin SFP (Second Focal Plane) reticle with four mil-dots on each of the thinner, central stadia. IR stands for Illuminated Reticle and it can be illuminated in either Red or Green. In addition, there is a sidewheel rheostat to adjust the brightness level to one of five intensities (either in red or green). When ‘off’, the reticle appears black. The IR function requires a CR2032 battery (supplied).

A mil-dot reticle is useful for making quick aimpoint allowances. It can also be used to ‘bracket’ the target for a rough and ready range estimator. The IR feature is is particularly useful when shooting in low-level or difficult lighting conditions, when it may be difficult to pick out a black crosshair against the target.

Construction

Besides its SSS, TSS and IR Mil-Dot attributes, the PAO 1-4×24 SSS Mil-Dot IR Riflescope features numerous other high-end appointments. It has a 30mm body tube, high quality and multi-coated lens arrays and a fast-focus eyepiece. It is also Fog proof, waterproof and shockproof and has been completely sealed and Nitrogen-purged to prevent moisture ingress. The scope measures 252mm long, and weighs approx. 500g.
