Smart Spherical Structure

The PAO 3-9×42 SSS Mil-Dot IR Riflescope is a high performance scope for use on all air rifles, rimfire and centrefire rifles. This scope is a general all-round telescopic sight suitable for hunting, plinking and target shooting. By comparison with many other similar-spec scopes, it is super compact. What is SSS?

SSS stands for Smart Spherical Structure. This is a highly innovative new concept in scope design, where the erector tube utilises an all-metal spherical construction. So when the windage and elevation turrets engage this part, you get more precise adjustments than with conventional scopes. This is a particularly desirable feature on a scope designed especially for long-range, precision shooting. Typically most other scopes use a metal-rubber interface for these adjustments. Besides extra precision, the SSS design is also more solid, meaning the scope is more likely to hold its zero under recoil, or with any knocks it may taken while in the field or on the range.

The elevation and windage adjusters on the PAO 3-9×42 SSS Mil-Dot IR Riflescope offer 1/4 MOA click-stop adjustments (1/4″ at 100 yards). Both the elevation and windage adjusters are external, so you can turn them with your fingers and do not need a coin. Each turret has a numbered vernier, which is easily reset to ‘0’ for reference. The turrets also feature a ‘lock’ ring so that you cannot inadvertently turn them and lose zero.

Improved Field of View (FoV)

In addition, the PAO 3-9×42 SSS Mil-Dot IR Riflescope has an improved FoV – the overall vista you see when viewing your target through the scope. This comes courtesy of its Thin Scope Shell (TSS) construction, which utilises a 1″ diameter body tube. Coupled with the lower magnification range specifications of this SSS model, think of it as a wide-angle scope without the image distortion that you can sometimes experience with such scopes. A wider field of view means you will see a lot more detail around your target. This makes the PAO 3-9×42 SSS Mil-Dot IR Riflescope especially good for ‘spotting’.

Variable Magnification

There are many advantages of a variable-magnification range. In the case of the PAO 3-9×42 SSS Mil-Dot IR Riflescope, you get a magnification range of between 3x power and a 9x power. This means that whatever the ambient lighting conditions, you will enjoy a clearer, brighter, sharper sight picture. Additionally, the 42mm, multi-coated objective lens offers 5% more light-gathering surface area than a conventional 40mm objective scope. So, effectively, you can shoot on a higher magnification for longer in dimming light conditions, such as at dawn and dusk.

Additionally, the objective bell has an integral cowling to eliminate reflections from overhead stray light (such as a bright sky). All these attributes make the PAO 3-9×42 SSS Mil-Dot IR Riflescope ideal for pest control work, where its many other user-friendly attributes also aid the hunter.

Rangefinding

The mil-dot crosshair of the PAO 3-9×42 SSS Mil-Dot IR Riflescope gives you an added benefit of onboard range-finding – so you don’t necessarily need a separate laser rangefinder. Simply use the Mil-Dot reticle to ‘bracket’ your target between the mil-dots. Because the crosshair is located in the second focal plane (SFP), the relationship of the target will change as you zoom through the scope’s magnification. With a little homework, you can work out the distances and then use this as a rough and ready guide to estimating range.

What’s more, the PAO 3-9×42 SSS Mil-Dot IR Riflescope adds a bonus feature, too. It is specced with a zoom ring throw lever, making it a lot easier to turn the magnification ring, even if you’re wearing thick shooting gloves. The zoom range is stepless and turns between 3x power and 9x power.

IR Illuminated Reticle

The multi-stadia crosshair of the PAO 3-9×42 SSS Mil-Dot IR Riflescope features a thick and thin SFP reticle with four mil-dots on each of the thinner, central stadia. IR stands for Illuminated Reticle and it can be illuminated in either Red or Green. In addition, there is a rheostat mounted on the eyepiece to adjust the brightness level to one of five intensities (either in red or green). When ‘off’, the reticle appears black. The IR function requires a CR2032 battery (supplied).

Besides bracketing, a mil-dot reticle is useful for making quick aimpoint allowances. The IR feature is is particularly useful when shooting in low-level or difficult lighting conditions, when it may be difficult to pick out a black crosshair against the target.

Construction

Apart from its SSS, TSS and IR Mil-Dot attributes, the PAO 3-9×42 SSS Mil-Dot IR Riflescope features numerous other high-end appointments. It has a 25.4mm (1″) body tube, high quality and multi-coated lens arrays and a fast-focus eyepiece. It is also Fog proof, waterproof and shockproof and has been completely sealed and Nitrogen-purged to prevent moisture ingress. The scope measures just 227mm long, and weighs only 512g.

Extras

The PAO 3-9×42 SSS Mil-Dot IR Riflescope comes with elasticated see-through lens covers (high contrast objective). It is also supplied ready-fitted with mounting rings with 9/11mm clamps so you can put the scope straight onto your rifle.
