Description
PAO 3-9×50 EMERALD IR PA Riflescope
With Red Green Blue Triple Mil-Dot Illumination and mounts
The PAO 3-9×50 EMERALD IR PA Riflescope is an incredible telescopic sight for use with spring, PCP, CO2 and pump-up air rifles. It is also rated for rimfire and centrefire rifles. It features a mil-dot reticle that can illuminated in Red, Green or blue – each with three levels of brightness. The scope also has a parallax adjustable objective lens and boasts finger adjustable, locking and resettable elevation and windage turrets. Its Emerald lenses are treated with our super-bright Emerald coating, and protected by flip-up covers.
Our PAO 3-9×50 EMERALD IR PA Riflescope also comes ready-fitted with mounts – complete with retractable recoil pin – so you can bolt it straight on to your rifle!
What the numbers and letters mean
The 3-9x designation of this scope means it has a variable magnification. You can steplessly zoom through the range of 3x power to 9x power. The 50 refers to the diameter in millimetres of the objective lens – that’s the ‘light gathering’ end which determines how bright the sight picture is. The IR means Illuminable Reticle (see below). And the PA means Parallax Adjustable (see below).
The specification of the PAO 3-9×50 EMERALD IR PA Riflescope is ideal for pest control, target and general shooting… especially in lower levels of light.
What is an EMERALD scope?
Emerald is the name PAO gives to its green-tinted optics. The lenses used in the PAO 3-9×50 EMERALD IR PA Riflescope are high quality and multi-coated to ensure two things.
First: Maximum light transmission. This means that you get a bright sight picture, especially in low-light conditions. So you should have no problem picking out its mil-dot crosshairs on the target. This is also complemented with the oversize, 50mm objective lens.
Second: Clarity. So you will also get superb detail in the image. This is important on a zoom scope, especially at the highest (9x) magnification of this model. Effectively, your target appears up to nine times closer, but still also look super sharp.
We also stock a 3-9×40 model available in the Emerald range of PAO scopes.
Triple Illumination Mil-Dot Crosshair
The mil-dot, second focal plane (SFP) reticle fitted to the the PAO 3-9×50 EMERALD IR PA Riflescope is a very special crosshair indeed. When you look through the scope, you will see thick-to-thin crosshair stadia, with six dots either side of thin, central ‘hanging’ crosswires. Mil-dots are so much better than a plain crosshair for a number of reasons:
You can use then for approximate range-finding by ‘bracketing’ your target. Simply take a note of the the ‘gap’ measurements between the dots at various ranges. Then use that as a reference when shooting at targets of roughly known size to get a rough idea of the range distance. For example, you might find that bracketing a tin can between three dots is 25 yards, but if you can bracket it between just two dots, then it’s more like 15 yards. Many hunters and field target shooters swear by the bracketing system, so the PAO 3-9×50 EMERALD IR PA Riflescope will be perfect for their needs.
Also, once you know the range, a mil-dot reticle gives you lots of extra aiming references at distances other than the range the scope is zeroed at. So rather than aiming in mid-air when shooting at targets further away, or closer, than the scope zero range, you use one of the dots. The mil-dots also make it a lot easier to allow for windage drift of the pellet or bullet.
But the PAO 3-9×50 EMERALD IR PA Riflescope incorporates an illuminable reticle – or IR – that’s turned on by a sidewheel control. Powered by a CR2032 battery (supplied), you can light up the central crosshair and its dots to glow either red, green or blue. Further, each colour can be set to one of three intensities. With this level of control, you will never lose sight of your crosshairs when aiming at the target, no matter how bad the lighting or cluttered the background is. Turn off the Rheostat control to view the crosshairs in black.
Parallax Adjustable
The knurled objective bell of the PAO 3-9×50 EMERALD IR PA Riflescope can be rotated to totally eliminate parallax error at the distance you are shooting. Parallax issues – where the crosshairs can appear to move around the target according to how you look through the scope, even with the rifle steady – can be the cause of inaccuracy when shooting with a telescopic sight. A scope with parallax adjustment (PA) solves this problem. Simply turn the collar to match the vernier to the distance over which you are shooting.
External Adjustment Turrets
In addition to the mil-dot crosshair, the PAO 3-9×50 EMERALD IR PA Riflescope features another aid to precision aiming. Rather using the dots for hold-over and hold-under, you can simply dial in a new zero by simply turning the advanced elevation and/or windage turrets. They turn by hand, no tools or coin needed. Click-adjustment is in MOA (minutes of angle), which moves the point of impact by around 1.5mm at 25m. This allows you to dial in a very precise zero. Each turret has a vernier which can be repositioned to the ‘0’ mark.
An added feature is that the turrets are also lockable. So you cannot accidentally turn them, once set to your liking.
